'Unreal Tournament remains available in the store but isn't actively developed,' Epic's Tim Sweeney said to Variety. It's a shame, as even though development has slowed down on the project, UT4 was shaping up to be a true arena shooter.
Unreal Tournament was announced in 2014 as an ongoing project. In turn, the community would help Epic create the game through valuable input. After two years of development, the game would see four high-textured maps alongside numerous modes. It barely moved on from there.
The fan input that Epic asked for pleaded the developer to continue work on the game since it's last proper update in 2017. It has barely been touched since.
Instead of spending resources on UT, Epic will move everything over to Fortnite and their new store. The Epic Store is an all-new storefront designed to take on Steam. Instead of the at-the-moment 30% cut taken by Valve for publishing a game on Steam, developers will only see 12% taken by the Epic Store – no matter what engine is used.
The Epic Store will launch soon with a specific hand-picked list of games for both PC and Mac.
Unreal Tournament will probably be kept alive by its fans, but then that's the case with every other game in the series at the moment. Maybe we'll see another Unreal game in the future; maybe Epic will leave it in the past.

The next Unreal Tournament is in development and it will be free. Epic Games developer Steven Polge posted on the Unreal Engine Forums today and announced that work on the next Unreal Tournament game is underway.
This announcement was teased earlier this month by Epic Games Vice President Mark Rein.
According to the post, Epic Games have put together a team of Unreal Tournament veterans who have just started working on the project. Ever aspect of the development of the game, from the lines of code to the art assets will be completely open to fan feedback. Polge promises that the game will stay true to it's FPS roots.
It will take months before the game will be playable and when the game is playable, it will be available for free. Polge clarifies that he means free in the literal sense of the word. Unreal Tournament will not be free-to-play, just free.
Safari download. 'We'll eventually create a marketplace where developers, modders, artists and gamers can give away, buy and sell mods and content,' Polge writes. 'Earnings from the marketplace will be split between mod/content developer, and Epic. That's how we plan to pay for the game.'
According to the post, Epic Games is focusing development on Windows, Mac and Linux. No console version has been announced nor is there a release date of any kind. Unreal Tournament will presumably run on the Unreal Engine 4, which has been available since last April for a $19.99 monthly subscription.
The Unreal Tournament franchise is a series of arena-multiplayer first-person shooter games that spans four games. The series saw two sequels, Unreal Tournament 2003 and Unreal Tournament 2004, which both ran on the Unreal Engine 2.
